Fingal County Council To Stop Bin Collections - July 2011
|
|
From the end up September Fingal County Council will stop collecting bins. The service to the whole of Fingal will
pass over to private uperators. The local athority stated the reason for not continuing with collecting the bins was that
too many residents were of what they discribe as ''The Waivers'' , waivers are given to people who can't afford or refuse
to pay their bin charges. Normally they are the unemployed, old age pensioners, single parents and so on. But what the council
didn't reveal was the amount of people who never paid for their bins to be lifted. There are housing estates in Swords and
if one drives around on bin day you will find that most bins don't have tags. Whole housing estates never even once bought
a bin tag in seven years. There are only a few exceptions in these estates. So you had genuine people buying their bin tags
every time they put out their bins who were really subsidising the non payers. No more waivers for non payers when this
service becomes privatised from the start of October.

End of Grove Lodge Portrane in Sight - July 2011
|
I, Brendan Ryan very much welcome the outcome of the review, just published, of the operation of the Grove Lodge
Childrens’ Residential Centre, in St. Ita’s, Portrane.
Amongst its conclusions, the review stated that Grove Lodge should not be used as an emergency residential centre for
young people who are out of home or homeless, and its purpose and function should change once alternative placements options
are developed. The further use of Grove Lodge, should, as far, as possible, be compatible and consistent with the main
services being provided on the site.
The new Grove Lodge child care centre, which was set up to provide emergency and short term residential beds opened in
January 2009. in Portrane. Prior to this such facilities were provided for in Dublin city centre locations. From
the outset, considerable complaints were received from local residents, and arising from this Cllr. Gerry McGuire and I had
a number of meetings with the HSE at which we outlined the issues raised, and called for a review.
These problems related to robbery, vandalism, fire setting, assaults, damage to vehicles, and intimidation of residents
of Portrane / Donabate, and residents of the St. Ita’s complex. We also stated the fact that Donabate didn’t
have a Garda Station, and that the lack of a good public transport posed difficulty for the residents of Grove Lodge getting
to school/training in their own local areas.
In welcoming this report, we are pleased that the case we made has been taken on board by the HSE. We acknowledge
that the type of emergency facilities provided at Grove Lodge are vitally important for young people, however our contention
that Donabate was an inappropriate location for the provision of such facilities has been vindicated by the outcome of this
review. We also wish to acknowledge the significant played by Donabate Portrane Community Council in bringing this issue
to a successful conclusion.
During follow-up discussions with Senior Management in the HSE regarding the time-frame for the phasing out of the unit,
I’ve been informed that there will be a necessary lead-in period of possibly in the region of a year to allow for the
creation of alternative capacity in other areas.
Whilst this time-frame is not ideal, I am pleased that an end is finally in sight.

STATEMENT BY BRENDAN RYAN Labour Party TD, Dublin North Wednesday, 20 April 2011 RYAN CALLS FOR TASK FORCE TO TACKLE ISSUE OF
PYRITE IN DÁIL DEBATE
Labour TD Brendan Ryan has told the Dail that a task force to tackle the on-going discovery
of pyrite in Irish housing estates is urgently needed.
Deputy Ryan put down an adjournment
motion for debate calling for coordinated action from Government to tackle this issue affecting many Irish homeowners. In
calling for action, Ryan highlighted the complexity of the issue and the manifold effects it can have on households.
He said: “There are many implications for those people coping with pyrite. Many people feel
unsafe in their homes due to the structural damage. There is a growing stigma attached to this issue too, with many worried
that even if they get all structural problems fixed, the possible resale of the property would be very difficult.
“The phenomenon has raised anxiety, bordering on understandable panic among homeowners in the affected areas
as not only do many have to deal with negative equity caused by the reckless property policies of previous governments, but
now they worry further depreciation in the value of their homes due to poor building practices of developers. It is a double
whammy of anxiety and pain for many people.
“The Government needs to provide leadership
for those affected by pyrite. I am calling for a task force to be set up to report within a very short time-frame, with a
brief to fully examine all aspects of the pyrite problem which has affected so many homes throughout the country.
“The make-up of this task force could comprise the various stakeholders, led by the Department of Environment,
Heritage and Local Government and including the developers, the insurers, local authorities and of course affected homeowners.
“We need to get ahead of this issue and provide coordinated leadership for those affected and
most importantly, we need to find solutions.”
|
Pyrite is a very common mineral, traces of which are found in the rock used to make crushed stone for backfill in the
construction of homes and buildings. In the presence of humidity and oxygen, pyrite can form a chemical reaction which leads
to swelling within the backfill, resulting in structural damage to the home.
Motion “That the
Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government sanctions the establishment of a representative task force, to
report within a very short time-frame, with a brief to fully examine all aspects of the pyrite problem which has affected
so many homes throughout the country.”

Brendan Ryan Commends ''WALK OF SOLIDARITY’ FOR MISSING FISHERMEN''
|
|
Deputy Brendan Ryan would like to commend all who took part in the “Walk of Solidarity” for the families
of missing fishermen Ronan Browne and David Gilsenan.
He said: “The “Walk of Solidarity” attracted a crowd of nearly 10,000 according to Garda estimates
which just demonstrates the support the local community is giving to the search efforts and to the families of Ronan Browne
and David Gilsenan. The respectful solemnity in which the walk took place reflected the mood of the town since both fishermen
went missing last Friday. I was proud, together with my family, to take part in such an outpouring of community goodwill and
support for both the families of the missing fishermen and for all those volunteers helping in the search.”
The “Walk of Solidarity” also raised funds to pay for fuel for the dozens of fishermen aiding the RNLI in
the ongoing search efforts. I would like to further commend all those involved in the search efforts.
